Presépio Humano - Human Crib
Em
Priscos, uma pequena vila perto de Braga, durante a época de Natal, podemos ver
o maior presépio humano da Europa. Trata-se de uma viagem até ao tempo em que
Jesus viveu e um bom exemplo de solidariedade, trabalho e fé.
In Priscos, a small village near Braga, around
Christmas time, we can see the biggest human European crib. It’s a travel back
to the time when Jesus lived and a good example of people’s solidarity, work
and faith.

Os
cozinheiros da Escola da Ponte divertiram-se a preparar duas sobremesas
natalícias típicas portuguesas - a
aletria e os formigos – em dois workshops que decorreram no dia 15 de dezembro
de 2011. Estes deliciosos pratos foram servidos no almoço de Natal da escola,
no dia seguinte, e fizeram sucesso!

The cookers from Escola da Ponte had a lot of fun
preparing two typical Portuguese Christmas desserts – aletria and formigos – in two workshops that took place on December
15th, 2011. These delicious plates were served at our Christmas lunch, in the
following day, and they were a success!

Nicolinas - St. Nicholas Celebrations
A noite do dia 29 de novembro
marcou o início das Nicolinas, em
Guimarães, com a festa do Pinheiro. Pela primeira vez, assisti a estes festejos
em honra de São Nicolau.
Descobri que existem várias
tradições associadas a esta noite: as pessoas saem para a rua e tocam tambores,
num desfile, fazendo uma grande barulheira! Algumas das pessoas que desfilam
erguem no ar uns bonecos, para marcar o ritmo dos tambores. Os tambores são
seguidos por várias carroças, puxadas por bois, com mensagens sobre temas da
atualidade ou mesmo sobre a cidade de Guimarães. No final, surge um enorme
pinheiro, enfeitado com lanternas, o qual será plantado num local emblemático
da cidade, marcando o início oficial das Nicolinas.
Para mim, este foi um dia épico,
porque, para além de me divertir, fiquei a conhecer esta tradição anual, que
decorre em Guimarães, em homenagem a São Nicolau.

The night of November 29th marked the beginning of St. Nicholas
celebrations, in Guimarães. The famous Pine tree parade took place and, for the
first time, I went to this celebration in honor of St. Nicholas.
I have discovered that there are many traditions associated to this
night: people come out to the streets with their drums, in a parade, making
lots of noise. Some people raise dolls in the air, in order to mark the rhythm
of the drums. Following the drummers, there are many cars pulled by oxen,
decorated with messages related to the Portuguese reality or the city issues.
At the end, an enormous pine-tree, decorated with lanterns, is planted on an
emblematic place in the city, representing the official beginning of the
celebrations.
For me, this was an epic day, because, besides having fun, I had the
opportunity of knowing this annual tradition, which takes place in Guimarães,
in honor of St. Nicholas.
